Children and Families

Family Project trip to Margate

In 2015/16, the families of over 80 children were supported through the school admissions process

Family Project

We provide comprehensive and tailored support for Latin American and Spanish/Portuguese speaking migrant families while they find their feet in the UK.

For children aged 5-12 that have recently arrived in the UK, and are currently out of mainstream education while they await a school place, we provide two, weekly sessions on English as a foreign language, bi-lingual homework support and creative activities such as arts and crafts, drama and cooking.

We develop activities and classes around the National Curriculum to complement the work children will be doing at school. We also tailor activities to the children’s individual needs and abilities.

We understand that both schools and parents can find it difficult to communicate with each other due to limited (or no) Spanish/Portuguese-speaking staff and lack of English language skills respectively. We are also able to provide interpreting support at parent/teacher meetings to facilitate communication.

We seek to work with the family as a whole; monthly cultural trips to places of interest, such as family days at museums and theatre performances, give families the opportunity to spend time together and engage with their local community.

“We are more united as a family. My daughter can’t sleep the night before a trip because she is so excited for it to be time to go.”

– Mother of Laura, 10, from Colombia
