If you lived in Latin America or your mother is Latin American you could have contracted Chagas disease without knowing it.

What is Chagas disease?

It is an infectious disease caused by a parasite (Trypanosoma cruzi). This parasite lives in various regions of Latin America.

How do you catch it?

• Through the bite of an insect known as triatomine bug, or “kissing bug”
• From mother to baby in pregnancy and birth (vertical transmission).

One out of three infected people will develop cardiac or intestinal disease. Tests and treatments are free in the UK.
